Course Details

The purpose of this class is to improve your grammar and vocabulary in English for academic contexts. If you do well in this class, you will be better prepared to do well in courses where English is the medium of instruction.

Target Goals
By the end of this course, you should be able to identify correct use of inverted and implied conditionals, and the meanings of level 4 and 5 words and phrases on the University List. The University List is a compilation of the most common sub-technical vocabulary in academic textbooks.

You should be able to control, in sentence level production, all structures introduced at the previous levels, including:

  • noun phrases (articles and plural nouns)

  • verb tenses

  • passive voice

  • subordinating conjunctions and transitions

  • sentence completeness

  • noun clauses

You should also be able to control, in sentence level production, these new skills:

  • passive and active participial phrases

  • real and unreal conditionals

  • grammar competence when writing 100-word passages
