How to Apply
Requirements Admission » Frequently Asked Questions Frequently Asked Questions about SIEBL Admissions
Q: I am already attending graduate school in the US. Do I have to take the course before starting graduate school? A: While the program is most useful to students who are about to begin their studies, students with study experience in the US, such as visiting or post-doctorate scholars, have also rated the program very highly. Q: Can I apply for SIEBL before I decide which school to attend? A: Because the size of the program is limited, we strongly encourage you to send your SIEBL application early. If you have not decided which university to attend at the time of your application to our program, please include a statement listing the universities and departments you are considering. Q: I already have an I-20 from my Graduate School. Do I need an I-20 from the University of Washington, International & English Language Programs? A: As a SIEBL student, you are required to have a SIEBL I-20 from the UW's International & English Language Programs if you plan to study on an F-1 Visa. When attending the SIEBL program, it is necessary that you enter the US and apply for your F-1 Visa using only the SIEBL I-20. Once you arrive in Seattle, your Graduate School can process a transfer I-20 for you. Please feel free to email the SIEBL Program Manager at siblinfo@u.washington.edu with further questions regarding your I-20 or student visa needs. Q: I've been issued a J-1 Visa. Do I still need an I-20 from the University of Washington, International & English Language Programs? A: When traveling on a J-1 or J-2 (Dependent of J-1 Visa holders) Visa, you do not need an I-20 from the University of Washington International & English Language Programs. Please help our registration staff by indicating on your application that you will be studying on a J-1 Visa. Q: What materials are provided and what do I need to bring? A: SIEBL will provide each student with a coursepack that includes reading assignments for the lecture series, writing guidelines and presentation tips. While it is not required, many students found it useful to have a personal computer/laptop to work on their papers and presentations out of class. |
